This was the first formal competition, so international rules were followed carefully.  Competitors wore their numbered bibs for easy identification.  Starting groups consisted of persons who were not in the same age/gender categories.  Groups were called up to receive their maps, after which they went to the starting line.  This took careful coordination because for foxoring, the starts are only two minutes apart.

Dean Mertz KØMKT has his hand over the start control and will lift it when it's time for this group to start.

Yuanye Yang, age 12, leaves the starting line.  There was no starting corridor, so competitors tended to go in different directions, depending on their categories and the transmitters they were required to find.

Xidong Li stops shortly after starting to check his receiver and listen for signals.

Eleven-year-old Xun Liang is on her way to a silver medal in W13 category.

Zhijian Zhang is one of the Chinese coaches.

Hai Huang, Jr. is another of the Chinese coaches.  He was awarded a silver medal in M40.

Thirteen-year-old Yuelin Chen finishes to take silver in W16 category.

Hai Huang, Sr is one of the Guangzhou School teachers.

Zhuoshen Cai, age 13, finishes and earns silver in M16 category.

Harley Leach KI7XF of Bozeman, Montana took silver in M70.

April Moell WA6OPS (seated) was Field Medic for all of the competitive events, assisted by Joyce Gent N8WXK (at right).  April attracted a crowd as she treated blisters on the toes of this Chinese student.  As usual, the students got Subway sandwiches for lunch, brought in by their teachers.

Resting and having lunch afterwards are these starting line volunteers from the Rocky Mountain Ham Radio club:  Dean Mertz KØMKT, George Bartling WA9TCD and David Conder N0DEV.

PVSR headquarters is in Camp Cris Dobbins on the east side of the highway.  That's where everyone gathered on Friday for the sprint competition.

Typically there are eleven age/gender categories in national ARDF championships.  Since there were many middle-school students participating, we added four catetories (M13, W13, M16, and W16) that are usually included only in youth championships.  This paper was posted to tell members of each category which transmitters he or she should skip. For instance, youth in M13 were to find slow-CW transmitters 1, 2, 3, and 5 on 3510 KHz, then find the spectator beacon (number 6) on 3540 KHz, followed by 7, 9, 10 and 11 of the fast-CW transmitters on 3570 KHz.  They could find the transmitters of each of the two groups in any order.  In the sprint, the ten fox transmitters were each on for 12 seconds each in a 60-second rotation.
