The trip to the starting line for the 80-meter event was an hour earlier on Sunday.  Brian DeYoung K4BRI and Nicolai Mejevoi were in an early starting group.

In the starting corridor is Matthew Robbins AA9YH, on the way to a bronze medal in M40.

Mike Schuh KF7QDZ sets out on 80 meters.  He will capture silver in M50 category.

Vadim Afonkin KB1RLI, winner of many medals at previous USA championships, is headed for a gold medal in M40 on this day.

Carrying his home-built 80m ARDF set is Scott Moore KF6IKO.  He will get a bronze medal in M50.

Nicolai Mejevoi won silver in M40 category.  Alla Mezhevaya got gold in F35 category.

Harley Leach KI7XF runs to the finish line and a silver medal in M70 category.  The long-sleeved top and big hat may be very warm on a sunny day, but they are important for protection from the sun and insects.  His map board is made from a discarded political campaign sign.

Joseph Huberman K5JGH is about to punch in and get a bronze medal in M60.  Note the map holder strapped around his chest.

Thanks to electronic scoring, the medal ceremony took place immediately after the 80m competition so many participants could catch their flights to home.  Matthew Robbins AA9YH accepts his bronze medals for both two meters and 80 meters in M40 category.

Following a long tradition, Ardee Fox got a medal, too.

There are lot of other things to see and do while you are in the San Diego area.  Check out the world's largest outdoor musical instrument, the Spreckels pipe organ in Balboa Park.  It has been played for the public every week for 97 years.
